Professional budget books for every district
K12 BudgetBook is built by Lantern Civic Solutions with one goal: make it possible for every Massachusetts school district to produce a clear, professional budget book without weeks of manual effort.
Our Mission
Every Massachusetts school district deserves a professional budget book that clearly communicates its financial story to school committees, town officials, and the community. Our mission is to make that accessible to districts of all sizes, not just those with the resources to hire consultants or dedicate weeks of staff time.
Why We Built This
Across more than 350 school districts in Massachusetts, budget season means the same thing: weeks of spreadsheets, manual formatting, copying data between systems, and late nights turning numbers into narratives. The result is often a budget document that does not fully reflect the thought and care that went into the budget itself.
Some districts hire outside consultants. Others assign the task to already-overextended business office staff. Many smaller districts simply cannot produce a comprehensive budget book at all, even though transparency and public communication are more important than ever.
We built K12 BudgetBook to change that. By combining Massachusetts-specific financial data from DESE with modern AI capabilities, we help districts produce professional budget books in days instead of weeks.
Our Approach
MA-Specific
Built exclusively for Massachusetts districts. We use DESE function and object codes, understand Chapter 70 aid, and know what school committees expect.
AI-Assisted, Not AI-Replaced
AI generates draft narratives and analysis. Your team reviews, edits, and approves everything. The human is always in the loop.
Data-Driven
Automatic peer comparisons and benchmarking powered by publicly available DESE data. See how your district compares, with full methodology transparency.
What Makes Us Different
K12 BudgetBook is not a generic document tool. It is purpose-built for the way Massachusetts school districts actually work, with capabilities that save CFOs days of effort each budget cycle.
GFOA Award Readiness
Track your progress toward the GFOA Distinguished Budget Presentation Award with a built-in checklist covering all four criteria: Policy Document, Financial Plan, Operations Guide, and Communications Device.
MUNIS ERP Integration
Export directly to MUNIS, the dominant ERP system in Massachusetts school districts. Eliminate re-keying and manual data entry errors between your budget book and your financial system.
Audience-Specific Exports
Generate committee-ready presentations in one click. Tailored exports for School Committee, Finance Committee, Town Meeting, and Override Packet save days of manual reformatting every budget cycle.
AI-Powered Variance Analysis
AI analyzes budget variances function by function, generating plain-English explanations of what changed and why. Real-time assumption sliders let you model different forecast scenarios instantly.
