Terms of Service
These terms govern your use of K12 BudgetBook, operated by Lantern Civic Solutions By using our service, you agree to these terms.

1. Service Description
K12 BudgetBook is a web-based software service that helps Massachusetts K-12 school districts create professional budget books. The service includes AI-powered narrative generation, DESE data benchmarking, PDF generation, budget data management, and an AI chat assistant.
The service is provided on a subscription basis to school districts, charter schools, and other eligible Massachusetts educational entities ("Subscribers"). Individual users accessing the service on behalf of a Subscriber are "Authorized Users."
2. Account Responsibilities
When you create an account on K12 BudgetBook, you agree to:
- Provide accurate and complete information during registration and keep your account information up to date.
- Maintain the security and confidentiality of your login credentials and notify us immediately of any unauthorized access.
- Ensure that all Authorized Users within your organization comply with these terms.
- Be responsible for all activity that occurs under your account.
3. Acceptable Use
You agree to use K12 BudgetBook only for its intended purpose:
- Creating and managing budget books for your school district or educational entity.
- You may not use the service to upload, store, or process data that contains personally identifiable information about students, or any data that is not related to school district financial operations.
- You may not attempt to access data belonging to other districts, reverse engineer the service, or use the service in any way that violates applicable law.
4. Data Ownership
Your district owns its data. Always. All budget data, financial information, and content you upload to K12 BudgetBook remains the property of your school district. We do not claim any ownership rights over your data. You may export your data at any time, and all data is deleted when you terminate your account. We use your data solely to provide the service to you.
5. Intellectual Property
The K12 BudgetBook platform, including its software, design, templates, algorithms, and documentation, is the intellectual property of Lantern Civic Solutions and is protected by applicable intellectual property laws.
Your subscription grants you a non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the service for your district's internal purposes during the subscription term. Budget books and reports you generate using the service are yours to use, distribute, and publish as you see fit.
6. AI-Generated Content
K12 BudgetBook uses artificial intelligence to assist with narrative generation, executive summaries, and budget analysis. Regarding AI-generated content:
- AI assists, humans review: All AI-generated content is presented as a draft for your review. It is your responsibility to review, edit, and approve all content before publication or submission.
- No guarantee of accuracy: While we strive for accuracy, AI-generated narratives may contain errors, misinterpretations, or incomplete analysis. Your district is responsible for the final content of any published budget book.
- District responsibility: The district bears final responsibility for the accuracy and completeness of budget books produced using the service, including any AI-assisted content.
7. Subscription and Billing
K12 BudgetBook is offered on an annual, per-district subscription basis. Key billing terms:
- Subscriptions are billed annually. Pricing is based on district enrollment size.
- We accept purchase orders, which is standard for Massachusetts municipal procurement. Invoicing and payment terms are available upon request.
- Prices may change with 60 days' notice before your next renewal date.
8. Free Trial
K12 BudgetBook offers a 30-day free trial with full access to all features. No credit card is required to start a trial. During the trial:
- You have access to all features without limitation.
- Your data is stored securely and subject to the same protections as paid accounts.
- At the end of the trial, you may subscribe to continue using the service. If you do not subscribe, your account will be deactivated, and data will be retained for 30 days before permanent deletion.
9. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law:
- K12 BudgetBook is provided "as is" and "as available." We make no warranties, express or implied, regarding the service's fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or reliability.
- Lantern Civic Solutions shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including but not limited to loss of data, revenue, or business opportunities.
- Our total liability for any claims arising from or related to the service shall not exceed the amount you paid for the service in the twelve (12) months preceding the claim.
10. Termination
Either party may terminate this agreement:
- By the Subscriber: You may cancel your subscription at any time. Access continues through the end of your current billing period. You may export your data before the account is deactivated.
- By Lantern Civic Solutions: We may terminate or suspend your account if you violate these terms, with reasonable notice except in cases of serious violation.
- Effect of termination: Upon termination, your access to the service will cease. Your data will be retained for 30 days to allow for export, after which it will be permanently deleted.
11. Governing Law
These terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, without regard to its conflict of law provisions. Any disputes arising from these terms or your use of the service shall be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Suffolk County, Massachusetts.
12. Changes to These Terms
We may update these terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you by email or through the service at least 30 days before the changes take effect. Your continued use of the service after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
